Hey Folks, It’s a busy (and costly!) time of year! We thought we’d share some of the cool things and tools (and practical stuff, too!) we use at Forest School on a semi-regular basis in case you need some stocking stuffers – and all for $20ish or less! Whenever possible, please support local!!! TOOLS: Light My Fire FireSteel Bio Scout At FNS, we build a lot of fires and this
Hey Folks! It’s been ages since we’ve written a blog post and are excited to be back at it! There have no doubt been a lot of changes since our last blog – when we were gathering sap from the Maples and eating syrup along with campfire pancakes (feels like forever ago!) . We are seeing more than ever now the need for Nature-rooted programs and connection with self and others.
Hey Folks! We finished off our Winter Session with an awesome week full of fun! With the quick snow melt and warm weather, our little river is raging and constantly changing. Students had so much fun in and around it this week from setting up dams that beavers would be envious of to carving out a course and getting out the tools to create boats for an epic race, and as
Hey Friends! We’ve officially entered our absolutely favourite “season” – I know, we say that every season, but it’s true – welcome to Maple Season! We are fortunate enough to have access to some old Maples and a sugar shack in Collingwood and spent the week picking out the perfect trees! Each student go to claim their very own tree that they’ve committed to taking care of from here on
Hey Folks! With our brief stint of warm weather over the weekend, dreams of leaving Winter behind (don’t get me wrong, we LOVE Winter) and heading into our favourite season (MAPLE Season) were on our mind . And while as the week progressed we were in for a wallop of snow, we celebrated Mardi Gras on Tuesday the best way we know how: Pancakes made over the fire with the
Hey Friends of FNS! We had a fun week taking full advantage of the Winter Wonderland – from sunny bluebird days to amazing blizzards! Our ice rink on the pond was finally ready for some skating – and just in time before the temps rise. The students worked hard to clear (and flood) the ice over the past few weeks and it culminated in some great times skating with friends,
From bluebird days to some of the coldest we’ve had this year, we saw it all this week. And the one thing they all had in common?? Huge smiles at the end of the day. As one of our favourite songs to sing reminds us: “Ain’t it kinda funny, how a cold day keeps you warm.” And the students found many creative and practical ways to embrace to cooler temps.
Hey Folks! We do a lot of things at FNS that encourage connection with Nature and no doubt a lot of it is based in play. There are 16 different types of identified play – and for us play is something that is done for fun and not necessarily for any practical reason. This week in particular we overwhelmingly noticed that our students came alive as they let there
Hey Folks! We had another fun Winter week at FNS – and more snow than we’ve seen all year! Students eagerly took advantage of this building a huge quinzee villages, an epic wall 5 ft high around the fire pit and numerous forts and tunnels. With all this snow, we also needed to get out our snowshoes to break trail in over 2ft of snow through the Forests! It’s amazing
Hey Folks! We’ve been having a blast with the Winter finally arriving in full force! Students this week took full advantage the snow as they explored, played, created and wandered their way around the forest! With the cold weather, our fire skills were put to the test and we were able to create epic forts, warm quinzees and seemingly never ending tunnels through the snow – which gave us an
