Spring Fun (a lot of it!)

Hey Folks!
We’ve been busy enjoying the warmer temperatures and exciting changes that Spring brings!  Here’s a few of the highlights over the past weeks.

Carving

Tool-use is a big part of FNS, and with the warmer temps, we are seeing an increased interested in creating wood projects.  We love the creativity and the projects we see developing around the campfire during down time.  With only a couple months until our Spring Trading Blanket (see here for more info), students are getting busy preparing!

Larping

When our Wednesday students approached us about creating a LARP (Live Action Role Play) we wanted to be supportive and follow their passions – but admittedly we had to look it all up first! A quick google search later on and we were totally on board with them.  Over the course of a couple weeks, students developed characters, a whole fantasy world, shelters and stores and mapped the entire area of Mysterious Forest (which became “Indigoweeodd”, a last remaining settlement in a post-apocalyptic world).  They developed complex social orders, a monetary system known as wood chips and a whackload of rules and guidelines around play, battle, trading and magic.   And while I can’t do it justice in a blog, it was an epic day of uncovering treasure, friendship (and treason!) and solving the clues.  And to our pleasant surprise, it ended in a peace treaty signed by all!  No doubt if your child was part of this, you’ve heard the stories and know by their excitement just how awesome this day was and why it will go down in Forest School History for us.

BirdinG

Some of our students are taking advantage of the return of the birds and really getting to understand and know them.  They are successfully identifying most common species,as well as other not as common ones.  As we tap into the bird language, we are learning a lot about what is going on all around all day and gaining a deeper connection with the land.

Geocacheing

Easter hunt… FNS style.  We learned how to use a GPS to uncover a treat (Marshmallows) to cook over the fire!

Sowing Seeds

We are getting our gardens ready, making planters and planting seeds!

Wild Edibles

Perhaps one of our favourite times of year is when we start seeing old friends popping up.  Our leek colonies are out in full force as we focused this week on sustainable harvesting.  Trout lilies make a delicious treat along our hikes and we’ve even sampled some wild carrots (Queen Anne’s Lace)!  It’s a tasty time of year.

Catchable Critters

We’ve seen a significant jump in the amount of reptile and amphibian friends over the past little while.  So much so that we rarely venture without a net in hand.  As the student are getting up close and personal with these folks, they are making respectful and lasting connections with them and uncovering first hand new ideas – including that turtles aren’t as slow and they are made out to be!

April Showers

We’ve had a lot of rain this past while are a so thankful for it!  We try and shift perspectives of rainy days and “bad days” at FNS in a effort to minimize the idea that happiness, exploration and fun are contingent on the sun.  Some of our favourite days so far have left us soaked!  The plants and animals are loving the water and it gives us new, more adventurous routes along our hikes.  Levels are up all over the place, with the river higher than we’ve ever seen and some sit spots being totally washed out.   We love that with repetitive exposure to the same spots, students get the chance to observe and notice these changes on a weekly basis.

Music

Most groups have gravitated toward really musical days!  We’ve got our established weekly songs, and are writing many more together with the classes.   Students are even writing and playing their very own using a ukulele!

Whirlpools and Waddling, Paddling and Pedaling

Hey Folks!

We had an awesome last few weeks of Forest School full of excitement and adventure! Here are some the highlights below, and scroll all the way down to check out the pics.  Thanks for the amazing year and see you in September!

Mountain Biking

We’ve got a ton of newly built trails at Forest School for Mountian Biking, so took advantage of this with a couple of our classes.  Students wound their way through the meadows, hills and forest as they explored some of our favourite places (mysterious forest, maple forest) in a new way.  We also left the property to try out some local trails together, while geocacheing along the way!  Our kids were pretty tuckered out afterwards, but as we found out at our end of the year debrief, this was for some their favourite memory!

Ducks

Huey, Duey, Luey and Darkwing – 4 baby ducks that paid our Chickadees a visit a few weeks ago!  Students eagerly fed and took care of these wonderful little creatures who have found a second home at Forest School.  They built an elaborate play pen for them using all sorts of our “loose parts”.  When it was time to go, it was hard to say goodbye!

Geocacheing

Did you know that the Collingwood Library lends on GPS units with dozens of geocache locations uploaded?  It’s the ultimate scavenger hunt and our students rocked it uncovering 6 separate caches over the course of the days we did it.  Ask your kid about it and plan your next adventure – there’s so much to discover!

Paddling

While the location and type of boats we were paddling varied, one thing for sure was the same across the board – beautiful paddling weather (with a narrow escape one day!).  Our Friday group canoed along the Beaver River, for a peaceful quiet paddle with the river all to ourselves.  We enjoyed a shore lunch (and a special homemade treat from one of students – thanks!) and some swimming in the rapids.

Our other groups set their sites on the Nottawasaga.  Some groups took canoes, others took kayaks and some were even able to paddle all the way from the Sports Complex to Schooner Town.  We saw deer, otters, beavers, countless birds and more.  One thing we can guarantee is that a highlight for most was lunchtime – swimming and climbing at the sand dunes!

Our Chickadees braved the water, too, on the big pond at Bygone Days!  They paddled all over and spotted lots of turtles out in the sun, and even caught some frogs!

Fishing

Our big pond is alive with creatures at this time of year and if you are familiar with our program, you know that we’ve caught quite a few!  From nymphs to turtles and everything in between, our students love to hunt!  We traded in our nets (or rather in addition to them) and grabbed our fishing poles and paddled our final week.  Our students learned to tie knots, bait hooks and how to operate different styles of fishing reels, all while balancing in the water. The result was impressive – literally over 100 Rock Bass in a day.  And to top of it multiple perch, a first for the big pond!  A huge success for our students.  Throw in some stand-up paddle boarding and swimming and call it a good day (week!).

Whirlpool and Pier Jump

To end of the entire season, our Friday visited the whirlpool (behind Matthew Way) for some swimming and exploring in the Pretty River.  It’s a beautiful, naturally carved out hole in the river that you can “slide” down into on a natural rock slide.  Afterwards we headed to the Collingwood harbour where brave students leapt into the frigid bay – a great kick-off to summer!

We want to thanks all the parents, students and our entire FNS community for the awesome year of adventure, play, learning and so much more this year.  It was truly awesome!

Squirrel dance parties and an epic coyote hunt.

Hi Folks!

Thanks for checking into the blog this week. We spent time learning about animal tracks and were fully prepared to discover all of the new (and old) prints on our beautiful property. To understand tracks better, students focused on learning various parts of a print, how/what to measure to correctly identify it using a field guide and how to use the print information to tell us about what’s happening (stride, straddle, direction of travel). Is the animal galloping, pacing, or stalking? Are they conserving energy or doubling back on their tracks? Are they moving to and from specific places, like shelter, food or water?

Whether we heard animals rustling, saw tracks, scat or deer rubbings, felt chew marks or scratches on trees, or smelled (though not nearly as well as animals!) animals, we could use all of our senses to discover various large, medium and small signs of animals nearby. We soon learned that animal tracking is both a science and an art- it’s not just about the actual print; we also need to be aware and process the entire environment while tracking to get a complete sense of the story!

Tuesday saw us jump into the role of animals with a game of Survival to start us off.  We then headed out and around Mysterious Forest, where we discovered a lot of coyote scat, and prints, rabbit signs, and different burrows.   Tuesday even brought the addition of Frarles (or Fred/Charles) our lovable, crooked live Christmas tree. Students also got crafty with some homemade wreaths, decorations and other play dough figures.

On Wednesday, students decided to stay close to a water source and we were amazed by all of the activity! We were able to track prints, discover more scat, and even follow a trail of a coyote stalking a goose – feathers, bones and all! Students seemed incredibly understanding after discovering a loss like this, especially when we explored the topic of needing to survive and took a deeper look at the life cycle.  We also ventured off site to do some stalking of our own with the community healthy kids GPS challenge!

On Thursday, with freshly fallen snow, students enjoyed seeing some fresh squirrel, chipmunk and rabbit tracks in between the trees. We even ventured to the far end of our property for the first time, all the way past the maple forest and sugar shack. We spent some quality time out there with newly invented student-led survival and camouflage games.

On Friday, students were keen to go to both the water source and Mysterious Forest on the hunt for more tracks! It was really fun to see them using the guidebooks independently and creating their own understanding about what unfolded (be it an epic battle scene or a squirrel dance party after finding a lost nut!) Tracking animal prints lets us explore outside, feel closer to nature and hone our creativity and imagination!  We also had a special guest – Mrs. Simpson (Matt’s Mom) – who taught us some American Sign Language to go along with the creatures we discovered.  Thanks Sandi!

A special thanks to our Thursday class as well for diving in to help set up part of our new amazing plans for the winter: a Prospector Tent, with a wonderful wood stove!!! We love how helpful and curious our Forest School students are and how keen they were to be involved in this new addition. Just in time too for our winter session!

Despite having some warm places, please remember to bring extra clothing. In particular, we consider boots, hats, mitts and neck warmers a mandatory part of our outer wear. When these inevitably get wet, we can dry them by the fire/heater and wear our extras in the meantime! Remember, with our freshly welcomed snow, always wear snow pants/jacket, with some good fleece and wick away layered clothing underneath.

A hiking we will go…

Hey Everyone,

It was a great week here at Forest School and we had a lot of fun as teachers exploring new places and old favourites with our students.  On Monday, we held a trial day to introduce new children to FNS.  It was a great day full of sharing our special places at Bygone Days, hiking, playing, making shelters, fires and building with hand tools.  Thanks to all those who came out, we had a blast!

Once a semester we like take a field trip to explore our local trails.  We live in a beautiful area and believe that place-based education extends to our community as a whole.  This week, we went to 4 different natural places with a goal to explore, have fun and learn a few things along the way.

Tuesday – Clendennan Dam

Located in Clarksburg, this place is a gem!  After checking out the dam (and racing sticks over it) we headed along the trails.   This hike offers a beautiful cedar forest, perfect for tree climbing as our students soon found out.   The Chickadees set up camp and played around while the Snowy Owls headed further down the trail – trampled across bridges, along the cliffs, through the forest and finally out to the Beaver River.  Along the way we saw lots of animal prints, fish and after lunch we were even treated with the discovery of a Beaver Dam.

Wednesday – Duncan (Bruce Trail)

The Collingwood and Heathcote FNS’s joined forces for this day as we stomped our way through some of the muddiest trails we’ve ever seen… and you probably already know this from the state of your child’s clothing.  But muddy kids = happy kids, right?!

We hiked for a bit, down hills, across streams and up ladders over fences then chose a nice spot to hunker down for lunch.  While there, unstructured time unfolded in various ways – building forts (which became zombie refuges), fairy cities with playgrounds and restaurants, and good old fashioned group games.

Thursday – Eleventh Line Trail

With the weather on Thursday our plans changed and we spent a good half of the day exploring and hiking around our own property.  In the afternoon, we stayed a bit closer to home and had an awesome time splashing through puddles, navigating log balancing beams and searching for the perfect hiking stick.  Oh, and again, avoiding the zombies on the Deer Trail of course! Kudos to these kids for braving (and embracing) the wild rain and snow!

Friday – Kolapore

Friday was a special day and with the awesome weather we were able to explore a really special place – Al’s Cave.  Located close to Metcalfe Rock along a side trail, Al’s cave is home to a Geocache.  After a crash course in Geocaching, students were given the GPS and led the way.  After some twists and turns, and climbs and descents, we found our way and entered the cave.  After a bit more looking we were able to locate the Geocache, swap prizes, write our name’s down and learn about Al and why this place is so important to us. When we returned to the school, students were so excited we continued our Geocache adventure and uncovered 3 more!

It was a really fun week, and we’d encourage you to explore these places with your kids! Let us know if you need anymore details to get there!   Before we wrap up, we wanted to send out a BIG WELCOME to our new students this week and last. It’s exciting seeing our community growing!

A big thank you to all of the students who helped create our wonderful FNS float for the parade – it looked fabulous and was a great group project!

Our Fall 2016 Video!

Hey Everyone!

On our last day of Forest School this year, the students’ skills were put to the test with an Amazing Race.  Just like in the show, the classes had to work their way through Team Challenges, Road Blocks (completed by one person) and Detours (choice between 2 activities) while earning materials (tinder, kindling, a pot, etc) along the way for their final challenge of the day.

The Amazing Race encompassed almost everything we’ve covered this semester. Various challenges, like the tarp flip, human knot and blindfolded hikes, showed us just how well these groups worked together as teams.  The group dynamic here was quite powerful! Other activities challenged hard skills (knots, compass and GPS use, and fire building) while knowledge tests showed us just how much they’ve learned and retained this year.  We even called on skills we haven’t learned here, like clues being translated from French!

No matter the challenge, they rose to it.   Throw in some snowshoeing, tobogganing, “skating” on the pond, and cedar tea made over the fire (the Final Challenge) and we’ll call it a day well spent outside.

In the spirit of the day, we spent a good chunk of it debriefing the year and looking forward to the next aspects of Forest School.  Students were reflective when filling out their report cards and gathered all their stuff (sticker boards, journals and medallions) to take home.  As many of you know, we wrapped the day up with a gathering at the Earthship for some drinks and a movie (see above for the movie!)

A big, big thanks to you, the parents, for believing in what we are doing and trusting in us to accomplish this.  We couldn’t do it without your constant support.   It’s been a real pleasure teaching, learning and growing with your kids.  We are loving the sense of community that is developing with this program and are eager to keep it going! See you in the New Year!

Next year:
-If your child or children are returning, please send them back with their journals and medallions so they can continue collecting new beads.

-While we will still be using the property at Bygone Days, we are excited to be calling the Earthship our home for the Winter Semester!  (How incredible is it that our classroom is in an Earthship?!) Drop off and pick-up will be there (633 Sixth St) at the same times.

– Please note that we’ve put up a tentative schedule for the Winter Semester on our calendar.

Follow Me!

Hey Everyone,

Though tough for drivers, the snowstorm over the weekend was sure welcomed by us!  It gave the perfect amount of time for local animals to run around and have their prints frozen in place for us to discover.  As the temperatures warmed up, we were able to also see lots of tracks captured in the mud.

Tracking animals was our goal this week – and we were after much more than just footprints.  Deer hair on trees, animal pee and, yes, even some coyote scat were all welcomed signs.  We also used our ears to hear if animals were giving themselves away…  turns out there is  a lot of noise in silence.

Overall, we found a bunch of different animal tracks.  Lots of white-tailed deer, some red foxes, rabbits, geese and other birds, and of course, Aden! He also gave us a first hand look at canine paws – toes, claws, dew-claws, and the heel.  Some students even put their skills to use to track the teachers and find them!

On both days, and in different areas throughout Loree forests, the children were drawn to the hills and made impromptu slides with all the snow.  It was magical to see the imagination, teamwork and good old fashion fun come to life.

Towards the end of the day, after completing Track ID 101, finding tracks, GPS tracking, and interpreting a picture of tracks by creating a story of what happened, the students had one more task to complete before receiving their Animal Tracking Beads:  survive “Survival”.  And they did.  Congrats to all our new Tracking Bead recipients!

In addition to the Animal tracking beads, we gave out a record this week – 3 beads to one student, in one day!  A couple of people received the Nature Lover Bead,  other earned their Reflection Beads (for 15+ journal entries), a few creative Craft Beads were distributed, and a wonderful Teaching Bead on the origins of Popcorn.  With only 2 weeks left, please encourage your children to finish up any bead work!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS:
Even though we are now into some Winter weather, we are still pretty comfortable at Bygone days.  We plan to be outside as much as possible so please remember to send your children with layers… too many is better than not enough.  At minimum your child needs a good warm toque and mittens/gloves, warm coat and snow pants, with a back up pair of splash pants.  A back-up pair of gloves and hats would be good too.  Remember – we are out exploring and sometimes that means snow, puddles, mud, etc.  Thanks to everyone who is ensuring this – learning can’t happen when we are cold.

Our classroom is unheated and usually not much warmer than outside.  On our end, we have:
A new Chiminea to have a fire going nearby
Small heaters to dry gloves
A kettle and tea (please send your child with a mug if they would like some; and it warms the hands!)
Extra gloves/hats just in case; and
For especially cold days, access to a warm space at the Youth Centre (though this is our last resort)

And one final thing!  We’ve had some inquiries about Forest School for the winter semester.  Just to clarify, some parents thought their children were going to be automatically enrolled in the winter semester which is not the case.  If you want to enroll for the winter semester, you need to go to https://fsforestschool.com/register/.  Or you can email Jennie Elmslie at freespirittours@hotmail.com .  Spaces are beginning to fill up!

Life is best traveled with Friends

Getting “Red in the Shed” to find our way.

Hey Everyone!

We had such a blast exploring this week! After learning the cardinal directions and compass basics, it was time for studying maps… and what better way than an all out East vs West game of capture the flag?  Students divided territory, created boundaries and marked key locations on the map before they were set loose in the playing field.  Teamwork, honesty, attack-defense strategy and some good physical endurance was the name of the game.

Afterwards, the students were challenged with mini-orienteering courses that looped back on themselves.  All students excelled at this and were soon up against the “ultimate” orienteering challenge that spread property-wide.   After finding their direction of travel and getting the “Red in the Shed”, students were off to the races.  The group was able to complete this challenge with ease, and all this before lunch!

And they are off on the Orienteering Challenge!

Our next challenge would take us off property to the Eleventh Line trails for an afternoon of hiking and Geocaching.  With the help of our GPS’s (a big thanks to Healthy Kids Community Challenge for lending us these!), we were able to uncover 2 Geocaches!

If you’ve never geocached, it’s a wonderful way to spend time outside.  Think giant, worldwide scavenger hunt using GPS technology – it can even been done through an app on your phone or borrow one from the Collingwood Library! Check out geocaching.com.

We are pleased to announce that EVERYONE earned their Travel Beads this week!  We also gave out 1 Teaching Bead for a lesson on animal calls, two Reflection Beads, and a Nature Lover Bead – Congrats!

Next Week:
Survival Skills!  If you have any (preferably) plastic containers that can be used as a fire kit please send it (or them) along! Thanks! (Small peanut butter jars are best as they screw shut and are waterproof, but anything similar will do!)

The crows seemed to be calling his name, thought Caw

Hey Everyone,

We dove into birds this week and were fortunate enough to identify over a dozen different species.  With robins, red wing blackbirds, cedar wax wings, so many waterfowl, and (our personal favourite) some killdeer to name a few, we had such an abundance of birds to ID and observe. We even saw a Red Tailed Hawk!

We explored a new forest area in search of pine cones (now aptly named “Pine Cone Valley”), then got sidetracked for awhile at the “Concrete Factory” (a wet, sandy, muddy mix in the “Endless Desert”).  We brought the cones back to the school house and made good old fashioned peanut butter and seed bird feeders to hang in our sit spots in hopes of attracting some new friends.

From the stories of the students, we hear you had a happy Easter and enjoyed an extra long weekend!  We had our own version of an egg hunt at the forest school this week.  Students learned about maps and the use of latitude and longitude to find coordinates.   We then got out the GPS and did an egg geocache, receiving new coordinates at each egg found, leading us to the next.  The grand finale? A pot filled with hot chocolate cooked over the fire.

A BIG congratulations to our first recipients of beads this week.  We gave out 3 craft beads for a great homemade bag, gravity-tension thorn spinner, and an egg carton museum; a storytelling bead for a wonderful legend told around the fire on the origins of maple syrup; and a 3 group beads for a great reflection activity led by a red tailed hawk, and two group activities lead by Snowy Owls.
