Our friend Al was actively involved with Free Spirit Tours for many years. He guided various tours in the summer and winter months, worked Kid’s Camp all summer long and even led back-country kayak trips in Algonquin!
In 2009, Al was involved in a fatal accident. He was taken from our community much too early, no doubt while doing what he loved – being in the outdoors and connecting others to nature. To this day, his sense of adventure and wonder in the wilderness is not forgotten. He brought so much joy, playfulness and passion wherever he went and his energy was simply contagious, along with his desire to learn… at least outside of the classroom, as his mom has shared with us!
With funds raised through an annual Hockey Tournament in Al’s name, Al’s family has made generous financial donations to help support students and families participate in FSFNS. Because of this tremendous support, in 2018 we created “Al’s Legacy Scholarship” for FSFNS, and since then over $30,000 has been given in financial assistance through this fund. (There is also an Al’s Legacy chapter for Free Spirit Kids Camp too – just scroll to the bottom!)
We are so thrilled and honoured to be able to sponsor children in Al’s name to help continue his legacy and let his adventurous and playful spirit live on! We believe this FNS experience is an opportunity that will ignite an ongoing connection with nature in a each and every child’s life, just like Al did for us! From the bottom of our hearts (and the whole FNS team) we thank you.
Please contact us below if you or someone you know might benefit from this exciting opportunity!
Without a doubt, we know that Al would be so proud of our FNS program and the work it does to cultivate a love of nature in children!
We miss you Al and are thankful for all you’ve taught us over the years through nature and meaningful play.
