EMILY WALTON – Collingwood, Meaford
My name is Emily Walton and I am passionate about working with children and allowing them to discover the wonders of the world around them. I discovered my love for the outdoors attending summer camp as a child and have carried those values with me ever since.
I attended the University of Guelph where I majored in Biological Sciences and minored in Psychology Brain and Cognition. During the spring and summers, I worked as a camp counselor at an overnight camp on the Bruce Peninsula. Not only did this allow me to spend my summer in a canoe or hiking around a beaver pond, it also led me on the path to becoming an educator, and I obtained my Bachelor of Education from Western University. After graduation I taught science for a year in England, returning home to the call of the Ontario wilderness. I knew it was time to combine my love of teaching with my passion for the outdoors, and the Outdoor Experiential Education qualification was the perfect way to do so. I have since taught in both the public and private sectors of education in Ontario. The most authentic learning experiences with my classes have come when we were engaged in an investigation outside of the four walls. Giving children the opportunity to explore outside of a classroom nourishes their natural curiosity and watching this build their confidence and skills is invaluable. I am incredibly excited to continue my journey with Free Spirit Forest and Nature School. See you in the forest!
